RF Cable Loss Calculator

Compare two RF jumpers at the same frequency and length. Find the lower-loss connection.

Free. No registration. Values stay in your browser unless you choose to share a link.

Inputs

Two connectors per jumper. SMA: 0.20 dB each; N-Type: 0.25 dB each. Adjustable planning allowances, not manufacturer specifications.

Cable A

Cable B

Advanced settings

Measured full-jumper loss replaces the complete estimate, including connectors. Use measurements at the selected frequency.

Verified cable sources

Only reviewed manufacturer data is used. Linear interpolation stays within its verified frequency range.

Engineering notes, formulas & examples

Formula and units

Ljumper = attenuation(f) × length + connector count × loss per connector + adapter loss

Manufacturer attenuation is interpolated linearly between reviewed points, in dB/m. Each panel represents one complete jumper. Measured insertion loss replaces its full estimate.

Worked example

At 5.8 GHz and 0.5 m, reviewed LMR-400 attenuation (0.355 dB/m) plus two assumed SMA connectors (0.40 dB) gives 0.5775 dB. LMR-240 gives 0.734 dB. Difference: 0.1565 dB.

Assumptions and limitations

No extrapolation outside the verified frequency range. Measured values must apply at the selected frequency and reference planes. Connector quality, bends, moisture, mechanical strain and return loss/mismatch affect assemblies. Comparison estimates budget improvement, never guaranteed throughput.
